Established in 1990 by the City of Litchfield, the Shoal Creek Conservation Area was created on the southeast side of Lake Lou Yaeger to conserve high-diversity Southern Illinois habitats. 266 acres of till-plain oak and hickory woodland, prairie grass, and waterways are linked together by multiple hiking trails ranging from easy to moderate difficulty.

The area is popular with birdwatchers, botanists, photographers, and nature enthusiasts of all kinds. Many varieties of plant and animal species live in Shoal Creek including over 700 plant species, 70 butterfly species, and 74 known bird species- including the migratory American Bald Eagle, white-tailed deer, songbirds, bats, and many others. Bringing binoculars is encouraged.

Shoal Creek is open 365 days of the year from dawn to dusk. There is no admission or parking fee to visit. Relax away your worries or get some much-needed exercise in the beautifully protected forest and see the best scenic views Litchfield has to offer!
