In 1919, two young men from Glen Carbon, Emil Trentaz and Harry G. Seaton, were killed in a World War I battle in France. The citizens of Glen Carbon banned together, held fundraisers, and commissioned an artist to create a statue in their honor. In November 1920, the Doughboy Statue, an informal name for a member of the US Army or Marines at that time, was erected to stand guard over their graves.

In September 2017, the statue underwent a complete restoration and was rededicated by the Glen Carbon Heritage Museum.
