Cheney Mansion & Complex
One of the oldest buildings in Jerseyville, Cheney Mansion is the headquarters of the Jersey County Historical Society. Originally built in 1827 as a four-room stagecoach stop called the "Little Red House", Cheney Mansion expanded multiple times through the years to become the large white house it is today. The building served as a tavern, a doctor's office, a bank, the false cistern in the home's basement served as a stop on the Underground Railroad, and three generations of Cheneys were raised on the nearly 200-year-old property.
On September, 9, 1909, the Jersey County Historical Society was formed and much of its collections were eventually moved to the mansion's grounds. Over time, the 'Lone Star School', a one-room schoolhouse operating in Jerseyville from the 1870s to 1950s, and the 1920s 'Union Forrest Church' were also moved in their entirety to the grounds. Both buildings' interiors are still intact including the old pews and desks, writing canvas, and oil lamps.
The Cheney Mansion's grounds also offer access to a ten-room museum with collections from Jerseyville's long history. See the extensive personal collection of Les Flautt including a mastodon bone and tooth from Otterville, cars from the early 1900s, two racing sleighs, a military room with exhibits featuring everything from the Civil War to Jerseyville's Tuskegee Airmen, a wedding room with period dresses from 1880-1970, and more.
With as many years of history the building has its fair share of ghosts; Cheney is a frequent stop for paranormal investigators who consider the home a very active haunted site. Today, you can book both historic and haunted tours of the Cheney Mansion by calling (618) 498-3514!
